The Write Around Series: Michele Reese and Curtis Derrick

Join poets Michele Reese and Curtis Derrick as they share new work inspired by the dynamic themes of the CMA collection galleries. Reese is a poet and a professor at UofSC Sumter, and Derrick teaches at Midlands Technical College and is a member of the board of the Poetry Society of South Carolina. The Write Around Series features poetry and prose inspired by art on view in the museum.

Michele Reese is a professor of English at the University of South Carolina Sumter and author of the poetry collection Following Phia (Word Tech Editions). Her poems have also been published in several journals and anthologies including Crack the Spine Literary Magazine, The Oklahoma Review, The Paris Review, Poetry Midwest, Ezra’s Book (Clemson University Press), Found Anew: Poetry and Prose Inspired by the Caroliniana Libray Digital Collections (University of South Carolina Press), and Hand in Hand : Poets Respond to Race (Muddy Ford Press).

Raised and educated across the South, Curtis Derrick taught for 43 years on multiple tiers of academe, most recently at Midlands Tech. He has won fellowships from the SC Academy of Authors and SC Arts Commission. His poetry has appeared in magazines, journals and two anthologies, TWENTY and The Southern Poetry Anthology. He currently serves on the board of the Poetry Society of South Carolina as coordinator of regional programs.
