Since the Contemporaries inception in 1994, it is been a goal of the organization to contribute artwork to the Columbia Museum of Art.
In 1998 and again in 2000, the group contributed framed works to the museum’s permanent collection. These pieces are temporarily displayed alongside the CMA’s Modern and Contemporaries Collection, at which time the collection is displayed.
In 2006, we began the process to raise $350,000 to acquire and install a Dale Chihuly chandelier. The organization was looking for a piece that would have a lasting impression and a permanent place in the museum. The commissioning of this piece sets precedence for the next round of young leaders in Columbia to contribute in such a way that the entire region can benefit and appreciate.
For the Contemporaries' next acquisition, we aim to engage a larger group in the acquisition process by taking an art finding trip to Art Basel in Miami.
While this goal is much smaller than the Chihuly acquisition, we aim to keep momentum gained from this acquisition going in the short-term. As the museum plans to expand its gallery space in the next five to seven years, we hope to raise the capital needed to have a Contemporaries-sponsored gallery in this expansion space. This gallery would provide a permanent place for all future acquisitions, and a lasting legacy for the Contemporaries within the Columbia Museum of Art.
By engaging a large group in this fundraising campaign and art finding trip, we hope to grow a group of philanthropists that will see this idea through to fruition.
