Sam sitting criss-cross applesauce on the floor in front of multiple pieces of art holding a piece that says" I will have fun, dammit"

Artists on Staff: Sam Goodman

Hi, my name is Samantha Goodman. I have been with the Columbia Museum of Art for two and a half years now as a gallery attendant, public safety officer, and now curatorial/facilities intern. My preferred mediums are oil painting, linoleum cut printmaking, and graphite.

Talking about your art is a pretty dangerous game. You think you’re done removing the piece’s choices as you create it, whittling its many possibilities away to a singular form until you start the process over with the next piece, but the "disenfranchisement" continues well after you start to discuss it. I feel if I tried to answer what my art "means" and what I want others to take from it, I’d be lying to myself. I could tell you, and you could discard that information, but never unhear it, while my own thoughts and feelings change even by the second. 'It' is out there, your automatic interpretation and mine, a part of the piece, an entity no one can reel back in.
