Artists on Staff: Brooke Chavis
Hi, my name is Brooke Chavis, and I am a gallery attendant at the Columbia Museum of Art. I use graphite, acrylic paint, and ink for my pieces. Art has been a passion of mine since I was little — I use it as an outlet to convey the emotions I struggle to say, and it helps me create a world of my own.
In this series I focus on how being perfect can affect you mentally. I use women from 1950s makeup ads and celebrities because this was the era of the 'perfect woman' who stayed at home and tended to her husband and children. This stereotype affected women in a negative way because they could never be themselves. They would have to hide their true emotions, which is something that I relate to as a young woman.
