Artist on Staff: Katie Chandler

Hi, my name is Katie Chandler, and I’m the visitor experience manager at the CMA. I enjoy creating art in all different kinds of mediums. Currently, I am enjoying acrylic paint and collage. I love that my work is an exploration of colors, textures, and gestural movements that create patterns and depth that draw the viewer in. I’d like people to see my work and reflect on how it made them feel. What did it bring up for you? Are you reminded about a joyful time in your life, or is it a reminder that there’s still hope out there somewhere for you? I hope people will feel their mood lift when they view my artwork.

I’ve been creating art since childhood, but my output really increased during my 10+ years as a visual art teacher. It was fun to experiment with different projects and work collaboratively with students to create something meaningful. What I liked most about that experience was working beyond mistakes — letting the mistakes be a jumping off point to a new path for the artwork to take in an organic way.

I continue to create because it is an inherent and necessary part of me, the experimentation and solitude, just for myself. Look out for my art at a few local Airbnbs, private yoga studios, and in the homes of art collectors. You can also find me on Instagram @katiechandlerart or on my website, katiechandler.art.
