In most cases, the art in a museum and the sustainability practices of farmers in the rural South don’t come up in the same conversation — but the themes in current exhibition (Un)Settled: The Landscape in American Art invite us to ponder the land, and the choices farmers make about their land management and the care of their livestock have a direct impact on the environments in which we all live, work, and create.
Head to the CMA to enjoy a program featuring "Soil Carbon Cowboy" Will Harris, cattleman/owner of White Oak Pastures in Bluffton, GA, and author of A Bold Return to Giving a Damn: One Farm, Six Generations, and the Future of Food; Sarah Simmons, founder/chef of City Grit Hospitality Group and James Beard Award-nominee; and Wilson Bame, CMA associate director of engagement. These three discuss the positive impacts of regenerative farming, its effects on the future of food and the farming landscape, and how sustainable practices support ecological health, economic growth, healthy food supply, and the reduction of carbon emissions. Throughout the conversation, watch short screenings (one of which includes Harris) from a project called Carbon Nation, a documentary series dedicated to sharing the work of people creating solutions to the effects of climate change. Following the program, enjoy a tasting of small bites created by Simmons using food from South Carolina sustainable farms.
