Art Class: Paste Paper and Bookmaking Explorations
Saturdays, October 3 and 10 | 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
In this two-part workshop, participants create decorative papers through a process called paste paper painting and use that paper in several bookmaking techniques. In addition to bookmaking, these papers can be used in mixed media, collage, and card-making, and can make great gifts or personal journals for keepsakes.
If you enjoy a fun, free-spirited approach to art and creating, this class is for you. No pressure and no previous experience required. All materials and equipment are provided, but students are welcome to bring postcards, old photos, postage stamps, and small, flat objects such as keys, buttons, or pressed flowers to incorporate. Ages 15 and up. Your confirmation email will include information about lunch and parking options. Taught by artist Sam Compton.

A native of South Carolina, June “Sam” Compton has always had a love of the outdoors and nature, with an insatiable appetite for collecting natural and found objects that eventually find their way into her dynamic compositions. She is a very diverse mixed-media artist and a highly respected retired art educator. Compton pursued early studies with a degree in fiber arts that influenced the beginnings of her mixed media art. Early in her career she had the opportunity to meet Andy Goldsworthy, who became a motivating influencer. She has exhibited her work in solo and group shows throughout South Carolina and in Georgia, Tennessee, and New York. She designed a line of jewelry combining handmade paper and painted canvas that was exhibited and sold in the High Museum, the South Carolina State Museum, and several South Carolina galleries. Compton received an outstanding national art award and was selected by the South Carolina Arts Commission as one of seven outstanding South Carolina artists. In her role as an art educator, she collaborated with Davis Publications, writing for their textbook publications in four states.
