hand-dyeing wearable art

Art Class: Color Theory, A Dye & Design Experience 

Tuesday and Wednesday, August 12 and 13 | 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. 

This two-day class introduces students to the fundamentals of hand-dyeing and wearable art. Using high-quality t-shirts and hoodies as their canvas, students explore color selection, fabric design, and personal style through guided creative sessions. All supplies and equipment provided, but students are welcome to bring their own garments to dye if they wish. Dress for a mess! Taught by artist and entrepreneur Chris Scott. $140 / $112 for members. Priority registration for members only through Wednesday, June 18.  Join today!

Chris Scott is a multidisciplinary artist and the creative force behind Dyes Effx, a brand that fuses hand-dyed fashion, photography, and design. Based in Columbia, Scott draws on years of experience in visual storytelling and wearable art to create one-of-a-kind pieces. His work celebrates individuality, creativity, and community, and he's passionate about teaching others how to express themselves through color and fabric.  

 Day 1: Design & Prep 

  • Introduction to hand-dyeing techniques and color theory
  • Design planning: sketch, map, or brainstorm your garment
  • Learn dye safety, setup, and folding methods
  • Prep and bind garments for dye application 

 Day 2: Dye, Reveal & Reflect 

  • Hands-on dyeing session: apply your design using custom color mixes
  • Reveal and rinse: the unveiling of your one-of-one piece
  • Group discussion and reflection on technique and creative choices
  • Tips for styling, caring for dyed garments, and sharing your final look
