Making our mark
July 10, 2018
Our staff have made their marks on this museum through years (for some, decades) of dedication and hard work. Today, they got the chance to do that literally! Like the beam they are signing, these steadfast individuals provide crucial support—often behind the scenes—that shapes this museum and your experience in it.
Change isn't always easy
July 6, 2018
All good things must come to an end. Our former orientation gallery installation, the Secret Garden, will be removed during our renovation project to make room for our new interactive space, The Cross Hatch. In this video we fondly look back on the rich 20-year legacy of this installation with artist Christian Thee.
Making it to Main Street
June 25, 2018
Have you seen the plywood wall along the Main Street side of the museum? Renovations are taking place all along that side of the CMA. We're talking studios, the shop, and later this year, a brand new entrance to the museum right on Main Street.
Gallery reinstallation continues
June 13, 2018
The reinstallation of the CMA collection galleries continues! Get ready to see old favorites (and new ones!) in a new light.
Construction has moved downstairs
May 31, 2018
Construction work has moved into the education hallway at the CMA! When you come to visit, you'll notice that there's now a large temporary wall to your right in the lobby. This is protecting us from the work happening to renovate the studios we have, build a new studio, revamp the shop, and create a new entrance leading directly to Main Street.
The CMA Shop is popping back up
May 17, 2018
The CMA Shop space is closed for renovations, so the shop has popped up in the lobby! You can purcase select merchandise while your visit, or you can order exclusive goods by local artists in the online shop and either have it shipped to you or drop by to pick it up.
The Loft is open!
May 16, 2018
Our new, state-of-the-art event space is open! Learn more from Events Manager Mario Guevara here, and come see it for yourself at the members' opening for Jane Peterson: At Home and Abroad.
What's hidden in the walls
May 10, 2018
Have you ever come to Arts & Draughts at the CMA? Have you ever drawn on the walls in the Loft with chalk while it was still an unfinished space? If you have, you can probaby technically tell your friends that your art is being preseved on the walls in an art museum. Well, not so much on them as in them. Learn more here.
Clearing the way
May 3, 2018
We're getting ready for our new Main Street entrance! That means saying goodbye to the CMA Shop facade, taking down some old banners, and getting some new ones that will fit with the new awning you'll see later this year.
The man who knows every inch of this building
April 19, 2018
Shout-out to longtime museum team member and overall cool guy Michael Roh! Michael was in charge of the original renovation of this building back in 1998, and he knows every nook and cranny of the place.
In his current role as facility project advisor, he utilizes his vast knowledge and decades of experience to aid the renovations team during our transformation. Thanks, Michael!
Check out some new galleries!
April 8, 2018
The first few renovated galleries are ready for art! Team Curatorial is getting started on reinstalling the collection. We can’t wait for you to see the new thematic approach to the galleries when they reopen later this year.
That is starting to look like a room
March 22, 2018
Our new event space is starting to come together! It's going to be totally customizable with a large area to use as you'd like and a grid ceiling to allow for all kinds of tech and lighting setups. Bonus points if you make your lighting as dramatic as this drywall installer's.
Sneaking a peek
March 1, 2018
Wish you could take a peek into the new galleries? Here's one! That long hallway will be a gallery dedicated to works on paper once it's finished. It will also lead to our new event space.
What's in a frame?
February 15, 2018
In our latest CMA story, Exhibition Preparator Laura Hine gives us an in-depth look at the painstaking process of restoring an antique gilt frame to its former glory. Watch the video here.
Sparks are flying!
February 1, 2018
When all is said and done, this area will be a corridor where art will be transported to and from the new modern and contemporary galleries.
Look what's coming down the pipeline!
January 25, 2018
We've got plumbers hard at work putting in the pipes that will support a new catering kitchen and restrooms for the flexible event space upstairs.
So much ceiling work
January 16, 2018
Renovations have gone through the roof — well, the ceilings. Crews have been working hard on electrical, HVAC, and plumbing.
December 28, 2017
You may have seen the large, unfinished area on the second floor at an Arts & Draughts or a Gala. Affectionately dubbed the loft, this area is being renovated in two ways. Part of it is becoming additional gallery space. The rest is getting a major upgrade to become a flexible event space.
Future gallery space
December 14, 2017
That great big hole in the wall is the first step towards turning unfinished space into more galleries. More space for art makes us so happy!
We see workers!
December 12, 2017
After months of preparation behind the scenes, the renovation work has hit public spaces. Workers are building a temporary wall to help preserve safety.
The last work of art in the collection galleries is now in storage
November 21, 2017
The CMA's chandelier by Antonio Salviati has 187 pieces and weighs over a ton. Installing it in our galleries required building extra reinforcement into the ceiling. So it's no surprise that our team saved this beauty for last when deinstalling the galleries in preparation for renovations. It took six curatorial handlers several hours to complete the process. Learn more from one of those handlers in this CMA Story.
