The Splendors of Rome and Florence

May 5 - 16, 2011

Spend 10 unforgettable springtime days tracing the development of western art from Roman antiquity through the drama of the Baroque with Chief Curator and Curator of European Art, Dr. Todd Herman. Explore Rome, "The Eternal City," and discover its rich artistic heritage from the humble origins of Roman Antiquity to Classical Rome, through the mystical Middle Ages and the glories of the Renaissance, to the thrilling counterpoint of the Baroque. The splendors of the Renaissance will be the focus of our days in Florence with a day trip to the hauntingly beautiful medieval hill towns of Siena and San Gimignano. Highlights include private, afterhours entry to the Sistine Chapel, wine tasting in the Tuscan hills, and entrance to the annual Artigianato e Palazzo (fair of master artisans working in traditional Tuscan crafts including woodcarving, glass blowing, metal work, jewelry, etc.) on the grounds of the beautiful Palazzo Corsini in Florence.

Open to museum members and non-members. Maximum of 25 travelers.

Cost $4600 per person (double occupancy) – does not include airfare.

An informational session for those interested in the trip will take place at the Columbia Museum of Art on Friday, August 20 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Orientation Gallery.
