Found Heaven:
The Lowcountry of Alfred Heber Hutty
April 16, 2008 - July 20, 2008
Alfred Hutty made his first visit to South Carolina in 1919 to teach classes at the Gibbes Memorial Art Gallery. Almost immediately after arriving in Charleston, Hutty cabled his wife and instructed her to “Come quickly. Have found heaven.” Hutty’s artistic vision combined with his technique uniquely captured the haunting beauty of Charleston — it’s religious, residential and commercial buildings, surrounding plantations and scenes from daily life. Many of the 24 etchings, drypoints, paintings and drawings contained in the installation — including one of only two pastel drawings known to exist — are being exhibited for the first time at the Museum.
