Champagne Reception with Shelley Reed5:30 - 7:30 p.m.Champagne Reception with Shelley Reed
Experience a rare opportunity to tour an exhibition with the artist who created the work. Boston-based artist Shelley Reed gives a tour through the galleries to discuss the inspiration and the process behind the pieces in Animal Instinct: Paintings by Shelley Reed.

Reed's fascination with works by the Old Masters has led her to bring a modern take to those allegorical pieces by creating large-scale paintings full of intricate details and rendered completely in black and white. Hear from the artist herself what drives this compelling process. Cap off the tour with a champagne toast, then join us for a reception with hors d'oeuvres and a beer and wine cash bar to share more of your thoughts with Reed and your fellow museum-goers.

Film: Women Artists: The Other Side of the PictureNoonFilm: Women Artists: The Other Side of the Picture
Where are the works of the great women artists? Why are there so few represented in museums? In this provocative program, respected artists such as Doris McCarthy, Judy Chicago, Joyce Weiland, and Jane Ash Poitras, in combination with curators, art historians, and The Guerrilla Girls, the "terrorists" of the art world, discuss the dearth of women’s artwork in major galleries and examine the poignant social history of women in the fine arts—a story of suppression, marginalization, and omission. The efforts of the National Museum of Women in the Arts is spotlighted to balance that one sided pictures of artist achievements.

Kress Anniversary Lecture SeriesNoonKress Anniversary Lecture Series
The CMA is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the first Kress gift of Renaissance, Baroque and 18th-century art, which established the foundation of the Museum’s collection. The Kress Anniversary Lecture Series invites four scholars to the Museum this year to deliver talks lectures on topics that highlight our Kress Collection through their particular expertise in their field. Once a month, from May through August, an expert lecturer will broaden our understanding and appreciation of the Collection.

This lecture will feature Rebekah Compton, assistant professor of Renaissance and Baroque art at the College of Charleston. Compton’s lecture, "The Glory of Color: Pigments in Early Florentine Altarpieces," explores the glorious colors of Giovanni di Marco dal Ponte’s Madonna and Child with Saints, paying particular attention to how the artist paints the flesh and clothing of his sacred characters.
