The Columbia Museum of Art is a captivating architectural conversion with 25 galleries (designed by George Sexton Associates of Washington, D.C.), art studios, a 160-seat auditorium, and Museum Shop. Ten percent of the building's undeveloped space is earmarked for future gallery expansion. The Museum has an annual budget of $3.4 million and a staff of approximately 34. It serves as the cultural anchor of a newly revitalized downtown - blocks from the State Capital building and the campus of the University of South Carolina. Columbia is South Carolina's center of culture, government, education and commerce and is within a two hour drive of the Blue Ridge Mountains, beaches and historic sites of the Lowcountry. A large gift from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation formed the nucleus of an important permanent collection of over 7,000 objects of fine and decorative arts. This collection contains masterpieces from Botticelli, Canaletto, Monet, Jasper Johns, Chuck Close and Vic Muniz. The Columbia Museum of Art is the only art museum in South Carolina with a commitment to touring and exhibiting international art.
