Outreach & After School

The Columbia Museum of Art provides many excellent opportunities for art education in South Carolina. Providing community outreach programs for children is an important part of the Museum's mission. To find out how the Museum can assist your organization with art education programs, contact Joelle Ryan-Cook at 803.343.2211 or email joelle@columbiamuseum.org.

Children's Garden Outreach Program
The Museum has provided twice monthly art outreach programming at the Children's Garden since 2003. The Children's Garden, A Community Service Program of Volunteers of America of the Carolinas, is a childcare center in Columbia, South Carolina, offering unique and comprehensive child development services to homeless, needy and "in crises" children along with support services to their families. Through this art outreach program, the Museum introduced and exposed the children to new ideas, materials and means of expression while teaching and reinforcing school readiness skills in a fun creative way, providing opportunities for experiences the children would otherwise not have.

Knight Foundation After School Program
The Museum has worked with middle school students in Richland One School District since 2003 through a program funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The Knight Foundation funds programming in 26 U.S. communities and aims to provide underserved members of the community with access to a wide variety of artistic and cultural pursuits. In Columbia the foundation funds programming through the Columbia Museum of Art, Trustus Theatre, Edventure Children's Museum, and Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. Students attend programming at their partner sites two afternoons a week throughout the school year and participate in Knight-funded summer camps. In the museum program, students have explored and created works using sculpture, photography, digital animation and garden design.

Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands
The Columbia Museum of Art has worked with the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands through an after school partnership since 2002. The Museum provides outreach to six Boys and Girls Club sites throughout the Columbia area and works with the students during the school year and summer to provide quality art instruction that meets the Clubs' national curriculum standards. Beginning in the fall of 2006, the Museum provides instructor training in standards-based lessons for all Boys and Girls Clubs staff members free of charge.
